So I know you both left this chat

Jeb

Jeb

Our individual chats just aren’t the same

Jeb

Please can we start it again? Please?

Jeb

I still don’t get what happened at that party. Will one of you please tell me?

Jeb

Please? I don’t understand what’s going on.

Jeb

Please

Jeb has left the chat.

CHAPTER 18

ADAM

Jeb sits in the front seat of Embry’s restored Land Rover, clutching his arm and pretending he’s not wincing in pain every time we go over one of the wicked potholes in his driveway. Of which there are many.

I’m in the back, stuck with my thoughts, because no one’s saying anything. Embry turns on the radio, and a Julian Hill Christmas song plays. But even my favorite singer can’t get me out of my funk.

Once again, I’m the asshole. Because I can’t seem to get over whatever shit I have with Embry—how he just triggers this Pavlovian response in me—Jeb fell and reinjured himself. And that injury overshadows the fact that despite our bickering, the tow trucks, and other issues, today was a resounding success. I guess Vermonters are used to dealing with mud, so they take it in stride—or at least more calmly than I would. Dirt makes me hyperventilate. Give me sun and sand any day.

When we get out to the main road, which means smoother driving, I think all of us let out a breath, because we were very aware of how much the jostling was hurting Jeb. And while the painkillers reduce his suffering, he needs time to heal. He’s not out of the woods yet. I suppress a smile and think, literally, not out of the woods… since this is Vermont, ha ha. But I can’t share my dad joke with my friends, because we’re barely talking to each other right now.

I want to apologize to them, though I’m not even sure what I’m sorry for. Jeb made money. He’s on his way to getting himself out of all kinds of trouble. Lots of Vermonters got their Christmas trees.

I guess I want to say I’m sorry that we’re fighting. I know I have a part in this, but I can’t help feeling it’s not all my fault. Is it?

God, what if it is?

If only Jeb and Embry could help me sort out what I’m feeling. Jeb’s psych minor would come in handy. The problem is that I can’t talk about all this shit with my best friends, because it’s about them. I don’t want to say something I don’t mean or haven’t thought through all the way. I’ve done enough of that to last a lifetime. Worse, I’m petrified I might be fucking our truce up beyond repair. If Embry and I can’t figure out how to live in harmony…

No. I don’t want to finish that thought. Because I’m not going three more years without talking to him. I don’t even want to go another day. I need these guys in my life.

On top of that, while their friendship is essential, my entire body clenches in pleasure when I remember how it felt to have Embry inside me.
